Scene Recreation – Honey Boy (Rubber Band)

For a recent scene recreation edit, we tackled the “Rubber Band” scene from Honey Boy, aiming to meticulously reproduce its original look and feel. Our shoot took place on a sound stage at the LA Film School, providing us with a controlled environment to experiment with lighting and audio.

A key element in our recreation was the lighting, where we focused on mimicking the naturalistic, somewhat dim and moody aesthetic of the original scene. We primarily employed practical lights within the set to create realistic sources, often augmenting them with soft, diffused artificial lights to fill in shadows and maintain a cinematic quality without appearing overly “lit.” We paid close attention to recreating the direction and intensity of light that would emanate from the original scene’s practicals, such as bedside lamps or ambient room lighting, to achieve a sense of authenticity.

For camera work, we utilized the Sony F55, known for its excellent dynamic range and ability to capture rich, film-like images. This allowed us to preserve detail in both the highlights and shadows, crucial for emulating the subtle lighting nuances of the Honey Boy scene. Recording on a sound stage at the LA Film School was instrumental, not only for lighting control but also for achieving pristine audio. We were able to isolate dialogue and ambient sounds, ensuring a clean recording that could be mixed and matched with the original scene’s audio if necessary, or stand on its own as a high-quality soundbed for our recreation.
